Yamba Safe Pads Project 🩸

Restoring dignity. Empowering girls. Creating change.

Menstruation is a natural process, but for many girls and women in Uganda, it still brings stigma, school absenteeism, and limited opportunities. Period poverty the lack of access to affordable and safe menstrual products continues to hold many back from reaching their full potential. Since 2019, Yamba Heart for Uganda has been running the Yamba Safe Pads Project in collaboration with SOWE,and Red Heart Organisation combining menstrual product access, skills training, and community education to break the cycle of period poverty.

Providing Disposable Pads to School-Going Girls

Many schools in rural areas lack running water, private washing spaces, and washing detergents. For that reason, we focus on distributing non-reusable sanitary pads to school-going girls especially those from families that cannot afford them.

This approach helps:

🎒Prevent school absenteeism due to menstruation

🚫Remove shame and stigma associated with poor menstrual hygiene

📚Allow girls to focus on learning without worrying about basic needs

Over 1,095 sanitary towels both reusable and non-reusable have been distributed to date.

Training Women & Teenage Mothers to Make Reusable Pads

While disposable pads work best in school environments, reusable pads are a more sustainable solution for out-of-school girls and women. We train women and teenage mothers at our center to make safe, comfortable reusable sanitary pads using locally available materials. Once produced, these pads are donated to vulnerable women and girls who cannot afford other alternatives.

This effort creates:

🛠️Vocational skills for income generation

💼New employment opportunities

🏡Increased awareness about menstrual hygiene in local homes

The project empowers women with products, purpose, confidence, and a path to self-reliance

Community Education and Sensitization

Since the project began, we’ve gone beyond pad distribution by creating space for open conversation and education. Using tools like Rosie’s World (developed by WASH United), we conduct engaging workshops covering:

🩸Menstrual health and hygiene

🌱Puberty and body changes

🤰Pregnancy and reproductive health

🚫The fight against stigma and shame

Over 150,203 people reached through sensitization and education programs in schools, churches, and community centers.

These sessions not only provide accurate information they build confidence, reduce stigma, and equip girls to stay in school and speak up about their health.
